Does Solar Pool Heating Work in Auckland? Look at August.
Some people trying to sell pool heat pumps will tell you solar pool heating does not work.
They might say:
- "Solar will not work in October."
- "Your pool will be stuck at 19°C."
- "You need a heat pump if you want reliable swimming."
- "PV solar and a heat pump is better than pool solar."
Here is the simple response:

That is August. Not December. Not January. August.
So when someone says solar pool heating leaves Auckland pools cold in October, ask them to explain this.
The Main Point
- A bad solar setup can disappoint.
- An undersized system can disappoint.
- No thermal cover can disappoint.
- Poor roof placement can disappoint.
- Bad flow or control can disappoint.
But that is not proof solar does not work. It is proof the system needs to be designed properly.
What the August Screenshot Proves
- Solar pool heating can lift real pool water in Auckland before spring.
- Roof temperature matters more than average air temperature.
- A thermal blanket makes a huge difference.
- Correct collector sizing matters.
- Actual controller data beats sales claims.
- If 24°C is possible in August, then "19°C in October" is not a fair general statement.
Cloudy Does Not Automatically Mean Cold
This is where a lot of sales talk gets lazy.
- Cloudy does not always mean cold.
- Cold is cold.
- If it is truly cold, most people are not planning a relaxing swim anyway.
- If it is warm but cloudy, the pool can still be warm.
- More importantly, the roof can still hold useful heat.
Pool solar heating is not only about a perfect blue-sky day. It is about whether the roof has useful heat available and whether the system is smart enough to move that heat into the pool.
That is why the August screenshot matters so much. How does a solar system get a pool to 24°C in August if solar "does not work"?
That is the question the heat-pump-first sales pitch needs to answer.

Heat Pumps in August
Heat pumps have their place, but August is where the heat-pump-first argument gets weak.
A pool heat pump is trying to pull heat from cold air while the pool is losing heat through:
- cold water
- cold ground
- cold night air
- wind
- evaporation
- long overnight heat loss
Yes, a heat pump may run. But running is not the same as efficient, low-cost pool heating.
In late winter, a heat pump can run for long hours to make small gains. Pool solar, when the sun is out and the system is sized correctly, can put direct roof heat into the water.
And again, if it is properly cold, who is actually swimming? For most backyard pools, the goal is not forcing the pool through miserable winter weather at any power cost. The goal is using the least energy possible to extend the swim season when the weather is actually worth swimming in.
PV Solar + Heat Pump Is Not the Same as Pool Solar
PV solar is good technology. It makes electricity.
But using PV solar to run a heat pump is still a long path:
Sunlight -> PV panel -> electricity -> inverter -> heat pump -> heat exchanger -> pool water
Pool solar heating is direct:
Sunlight -> solar collector -> pool water
If the job is heating pool water, direct solar thermal heating is the cleaner comparison.
PV plus a heat pump can make sense when:
- the home already has spare PV power
- the roof is unsuitable for pool solar collectors
- the owner wants exact set-temperature control
- the heat pump is used as backup or top-up
But it should not be used to pretend pool solar does not work.
Solar First, Heat Pump If Needed
The best setup for many Auckland pools is simple:
- Use pool solar as the primary heat source.
- Use a thermal cover to hold the heat.
- Use a smart controller so the system runs when the roof is producing heat.
- Add a heat pump only if you need backup, early morning swimming, or exact set-temperature control.
That is a very different message from "solar does not work."

- What collector area are you assuming?
- Was the pool covered?
- Was the roof sunny or shaded?
- What was the roof temperature?
- What was the return-water temperature?
- Was the system correctly sized?
- Are you comparing one bad week or real seasonal performance?
- What is the heat pump running cost in August?
- Why is there actual Auckland controller data showing 24°C in August?
Bottom Line
People selling heat pumps by talking solar down are not giving the full picture.
Pool solar heating works when it is designed properly.
The proof is simple:
Auckland. August. 24°C pool water.
That is the answer.
